Funding secured to improve Fleetwood swimming pool

Wyre Council has successfully secured £141,212 from the second phase of the Government’s Swimming Pool Support Fund, following the phase one funding awarded to the Council last year.

Administered by Sport England, the fund provides a total of £60 million to local authorities in England as a support package for public leisure facilities with swimming pools.

This second phase of funding provides capital investment for Fleetwood’s public swimming pool helping to make it more environmentally and financially sustainable. There’ll be shower-flow restrictors and photo-voltaic cells (solar panels) installed which will all contribute to the energy efficiency of this much-loved facility.

Marianne Hesketh, Director of Communities at Wyre Council said: “I am thrilled to be able to share this news. We are fortunate to have excellent swimming pools in Wyre which play such an important role in the health and wellbeing of our residents.  Securing this vital funding ensures that we can sustain and improve the much-loved facilities in Fleetwood.

“Due to our location, it is particularly important to provide opportunities for people to learn about water safety and how to swim with confidence. We encourage everyone to support our local leisure centres whenever you can and make full use of Wyre’s pools. If you haven’t been to your local pool in a while, go and visit and have some fun there!”

Sports Minister Stuart Andrew said: “Millions of people swim every year in England, but high energy costs mean some pools are struggling financially. I know from personal experience the health benefits of getting down to your local pool, whether that’s just for a few lengths, to swim with friends, or a water aerobics class.

‘’This further £60 million of support from the Government and Sport England will make hundreds of swimming pools more energy efficient so they can keep offering their vital community and health benefits for generations to come.”
