This weekend, Blackpool’s iconic promenade was transformed into a dazzling racetrack as thousands of runners participated in the much-anticipated 'Run The Lights' event, organised by Fylde Coast Runners.
The event saw participants of all ages and abilities come together to race under the glow of the famous Blackpool Illuminations, creating a spectacle of light, energy, and community spirit.
On Saturday evening, the usually serene Blackpool promenade came alive with the sound of pounding feet and cheering crowds as the annual 'Run The Lights' event took place. Organised by the local Fylde Coast Runners group, the event attracted over 2,200 participants, ranging from seasoned athletes to enthusiastic beginners, all eager to experience the unique thrill of running under the world-renowned Blackpool Illuminations.
Starting at on the Middle Walk of the promenade runners were greeted by a vibrant atmosphere and as the sun set, the Illuminations were switched on, bathing the route in a kaleidoscope of colours and lighting the way for runners as they made their way along the 5K and 10K courses.
"It’s a truly magical experience," said Paul Booth, a member of the Fylde Coast Runners. "Running through the heart of Blackpool with the Illuminations above you is something special. It’s fantastic to see so many people, both locals and visitors, taking part and enjoying the event."
Families, friends, and spectators lined the route, cheering on the runners and adding to the lively atmosphere. Many participants donned illuminated costumes, with some even running in full fancy dress, further enhancing the spectacle. The combination of the bright lights, the buzzing crowd, and the sea breeze made for an unforgettable evening.
As the final runners crossed the finish line, there was a palpable sense of achievement and camaraderie in the air. Participants were awarded medals, while many took the opportunity to enjoy the rest of the Illuminations, which will be official switched-on on Friday 30th August 2024 and remain on display until the 5th of January 2025.
"This event perfectly captures the spirit of Blackpool," added Booth. "It’s about bringing people together, celebrating our town, and creating memories that will last a lifetime." With another successful year in the books, the 'Run The Lights' event continues to shine brightly as a beacon of community spirit and local pride in Blackpool.
