Blackpool Police help children to ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ at local half-term safety events

As we approach winter, it is important that children are safe and seen when walking in the darker nights.

Blackpool Police are holding three events in the local area over the half-term break and will be giving away free reflective high-visibility items for children to wear, funded by Blackpool Council’s Community Safety Team. These include large stickers, keyrings and snap bands.

The events will also give people a chance to meet their local Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) and sign up to the free messaging service, In The Know.

PCSO Colin Hester and PCSO Debby Savage said: “From a young age, it’s essential to set a good example and to help young people understand why we need to stop, look and listen before stepping onto a road. These reflective items are a simple and great way to be safer in the darker evenings.

“Some of our tips for keeping your children safe on the roads would be to talk to your children about different crossings, such as zebras, puffins, pelicans and footbridges. Explain to your child why it is important to cross the road with a clear view, avoiding parked cars and junctions.

“If your child cycles, make sure they have a helmet which fits and is worn correctly. Ensure they wear high-visibility clothing and look into local cycle paths and lanes.”

The safety events will be held at:

Solaris Centre on Wednesday 26th October, 1pm – 3pm

Stanley Park Visitors Centre on Thursday 27th October, 11am – 2:30pm

Palatine Library on Friday 28th October, 11am – 1pm
