Changing places facility opens in Fleetwood

New Changing Places facilities at Central Car Park in Fleetwood have been opened.

They’ve been unveiled adjacent to the Fleetwood Beach Wheelchair charity base, and the official opening took place on Changing Places Awareness Day earlier this week, celebrating this vital new provision and providing an opportunity to raise awareness of the life changing difference Changing Places toilets make.

The facility has been made possible through grant funding from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities in partnership with Muscular Dystrophy UK, with capital funding in support of the provision from Fleetwood Town Council and Wyre Council. Danfo has provided this new facility and generously agreed to clean and maintain the unit.

The Changing Places Toilets are specifically designed to accommodate anyone with additional support needs which are not met through standard accessible facilities. They promote independence and provide safety for users with these additional support needs, enabling them to enjoy the day to day activities which many of us take for granted.

The Changing Places Toilet will also provide opportunities for more people to take part in events and activities and boost ‘purple pound’ spending in Wyre, all helping to improve the tourism offer in Wyre, allowing people to stay for longer and providing opportunities for more people to take part in events and activities happening locally.

The portfolio Holder for Street Scene, Parks and Open Spaces at Wyre Council, Councillor Bridge commented: “We are really proud to be able to open this facility today on what is Changing Places Awareness Day celebrating this achievement and providing a fantastic opportunity to raise vital awareness of the life changing difference Changing Places toilets make.

‘’It’s of vital importance to us that Wyre should be accessible to everyone, regardless of the complexity of their needs. The introduction of additional Changing Places Toilets alongside standard accessible facilities is hugely welcomed and will help ensure the comfort and dignity of all our residents and visitors.”
