County Councillors visit Accrington Market Hall to celebrate redevelopment progress

Hyndburn Council and Morgan Sindall Construction welcomed County Councillors Aidy Riggott and Carole Haythornthwaite for a site visit to see how the exciting scheme is shaping up.

The redevelopment of the Market Hall is part of the wider Accrington Town Square Scheme, which also includes the redevelopment of Market Chambers and Burtons Chambers buildings.

Lancashire County Council has contributed £1.5million towards the redevelopment of Market Chambers and the Market Hall as part of the county council's investment programme in regeneration projects across the county.

Cllr Aidy Riggott, cabinet for Economic Development and Growth at Lancashire County Council, said: "It's great to see the progress that has been made on this project. The refurbishments to these buildings and their surroundings will undoubtedly make Accrington a more appealing place for shoppers, visitors and businesses.

"Lancashire County Council has contributed £1.5 million from our Lancashire Economic Growth and Development Investment Fund towards regeneration activity within the Town Centre and we're proud to be able to work with Hyndburn Council to deliver this transformational programme of activity, boosting economic growth and creating new jobs."

Work on the redevelopment of Accrington Market Hall continues to progress. Led by contractor Morgan Sindall Construction, work on stripping out the interior is now complete, repairs to the external stonework and windows are almost complete and scaffolding is being erected internally for works to commence on the roof and glazed roof lights.

The council’s transformation plan for the Market Hall is to retain the traditional retail operation alongside an enhanced food, beverage and leisure offering, conversion of Burtons Chambers into a modern co-working space, and the Market Chambers repairing and refurbishment, enabling transformation into a cultural, heritage and arts venue.

Cllr Munsif Dad, Leader of Hyndburn Council, said: “I am happy to see the progress on the redevelopment of Accrington Market Hall. This project is an important part of our wider vision for the town. Seeing the space completely stripped out on the recent site visit highlighted the huge potential this space has.

‘’I’d like to thank Lancashire County Council and the UK Government for their funding contributions for the development of Accrington Town Square. The financial support from Lancashire County Council and the UK Government has been vital in making this transformation possible.”

Plans for Accrington have been developed and led by an independent board, who continue to meet regularly and maintain an overview of the Accrington Town Square redevelopments.

Accrington Town Square’s transformational projects have been made possible through funding by the UK Government.
