Empire Theatre expansion approved

The 115-year-old Blackburn Empire Theatre can now create a new dance studio, reception office and entrance.

It will involve the conversion of an empty storeroom at the thriving 330-seat volunteer-run performance venue in Aqueduct Road, Ewood.

A planning application submitted by the charity which runs the theatre has been approved by Blackburn with Darwen Council with four conditions.

The expansion will convert a large room in the performing arts centre in Aqueduct Road attached to the main theatre which has been used for storage for a number of years. It entails removing a large shuttered door onto the car park, creating a new separate entrance/reception area for a rehearsal studio, and refurbishing the storage area.

The proposal was supported by the National Theatres Trust which said in a letter to planners: “This proposal relates to a later building to the rear of the original theatre. Utilising the building for dance studios will complement the core theatre function and further enhance the Empire’s community and cultural offer.”

An Empire Theatre spokesman said: “This is great news for the theatre. It will allow us to create an additional rehearsal room which is all part of a larger five-year plan to develop the Empire and its role within the community.

“We will be working hard to complete the work as soon as possible so that the space can be brought into use; providing quality facilities for groups and performers.”

A planning officer’s report recommending approval said: “The application site relates to Blackburn Empire Theatre which is positioned on the corner of Aqueduct Road at the cross junction with the A666 and Bolton Road.

“There are two separate buildings adjoined by a small link.

“The proposal building relates to the one facing the car park area.

“The proposal is for a change of use of an existing vacant storage area within the theatre building to a dance studio.

“It will include an ancillary office and entrance foyer.

“Minor external alterations are also proposed to replace the large shutter door on the northern elevation and formation of a window and door opening.

“It is envisaged that the proposal would encourage increased community participation in performing arts in-turn providing both physical and social benefits to the well-being of people.

“The creation of an additional dance studio would also make an effective use of a currently empty space.”
