Egg Rolling returns to Preston this Easter

Preston’s much-loved Egg Rolling event is back this Easter Monday, promising a day packed with fun, entertainment, and tradition.

Taking place at Avenham and Miller Park on Monday, 21 April, the event is free to attend and offers an exciting mix of activities for families and visitors of all ages.

At the heart of the event is the egg rolling, taking place on the hour, every hour throughout the day. Bring your decorated eggs or Easter eggs and take part in this cherished tradition that has been a staple of this Easter event for generations.

Sarah Threlfall, Deputy Chief Executive & Director of Community & Wellbeing at Preston City Council said: “Egg Rolling is a fantastic Preston tradition that brings together families, friends, and visitors for a wonderful day of fun and entertainment. It’s a celebration of our community spirit, creativity, and heritage.

‘’We’re thrilled to once again welcome everyone to Avenham and Miller Parks for what promises to be a spectacular Easter Monday.”

For those who love getting creative, Easter Bonnet workshops will be running throughout the day, allowing participants to design their own. These creations can then be entered into the Bonnet Competition, which takes place at 2:15pm on the main stage. The competition will award the accolade of ‘Best Bonnet in Show’ to the most outstanding design.

A variety of performances will be taking place on the stage at Avenham Park, offering a vibrant mix of music and dance. Uke Club Preston will kick off the festivities at 11am, followed by the energetic dancing of Salsa Northwest at 1:45pm. Later in the afternoon, Preston City Mela will showcase a fusion of classical and contemporary dances, along with performances from the Preston Dhol Players and Bollywood dancers at 3pm.

Visitors can also enjoy street theatre and walkabout entertainment throughout the day. Epico The Dragon will see Sir Aurelious Jones embark on a thrilling adventure alongside his dragon companion, while the Hot Dinners SkiBand will bring a lively mix of ska, calypso, and rock ‘n’ roll to the park.

At Miller Park, the comical and chaotic Anyone for Tennis performance will keep audiences entertained with slapstick humour and slow-motion replays. Additionally, TOAST by Pif Paf will offer a unique blend of storytelling, music, dance, and food.

For families looking for even more fun, the fairground will be open from 11am to 4pm, featuring bouncy castles and rides. The Preston City Mela workshops will run all day, providing a chance to explore South Asian arts, culture, and heritage through activities such as kite making, calligraphy, yarn mandala marking, and henna art.

Be sure to visit the Market Place along Lord Derby Walk which will be bustling with food stalls and traders, offering delicious treats throughout the day.

Egg Rolling in Preston is a time-honoured tradition and a highlight of the city’s cultural calendar. Whether you’re rolling eggs, joining a workshop, or enjoying the many performances, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
