A new local campaign has been launched to safeguard Preston's Cenotaph and reinforce its role as a space of respect, remembrance, and community reverence.
In response to recent reports of anti-social behaviour around the area, the campaign seeks to remind residents and visitors alike of the monument's historical and cultural significance.
Located in the heart of Preston, the Cenotaph stands as a solemn tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives in service. Yet, incidents of disrespect have highlighted the need for a renewed focus on protecting this important space.
Despite the solemn significance of the cenotaph, it's become a common sight to see people eating lunch on the front steps, leaning against the back to roll cigarettes, and resting bikes against the stone columns that hold the surrounding chains.
The campaign, led by Preston City Council, will feature A-board signage placed around the monument with messages that encourage individuals to honour the Cenotaph and maintain its dignity.
Leader of Preston City Council, Councillor Matthew Brown said: "The Cenotaph is not only a monument but a symbol of the sacrifices made by countless individuals for the freedoms we enjoy today. It is our responsibility as a community to ensure it remains a respected and valued space for all who come to remember.Through this campaign, we aim to foster a renewed sense of pride and awareness, reminding everyone of the importance of treating this site with the respect it deserves."
Colonel David Waters President, Lancashire Armed Forces Association, who has been a key advocate for the campaign, stated: "Our Cenotaph deserves respect because it reminds us of the sacrifices made by Preston's men and women to protect what we hold dear - our homes, our way of life, and our British values.By honouring it, we honour our community; disrespecting it is disrespecting ourselves. Keep it clean, keep it tidy and treat it with care. Never forget what it stands for."
The A-boards, set to be placed prominently around the Cenotaph, will remind the community of the area's significance and encourage appropriate behaviour. This initiative reflects Preston City Council's commitment to protecting public spaces that hold meaning for the people of Preston.
This effort marks a step forward in preserving not only the Cenotaph itself but also the respectful atmosphere that it stands for.
Residents are encouraged to spread awareness of the campaign by using #RespectPrestonCenotaph reinforcing the message that the Cenotaph is a place of remembrance and reflection for all.
Residents are also encouraged to report any sightings of antisocial behaviour in and around the Cenotaph to Preston Police on 101 or through the Councils online complaints form.
